As Africa’s biggest football show piece, The Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) gets underway in Gabon today, the president of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on the senior national team, the Black Stars, to finally end the nation’s 34 year wait for an AFCON trophy.

The Black Stars, four-time African champions last won the Nation’s Cup in 1982. The senior national football team has since lost the finals three times in 1992, 2010, and 2015.

In a Facebook post President Akufo-Addo wished the players well and urged them to go for gold.

“Best wishes to the players, technical and management team of the Black Stars. It’s time to end our 34 year wait for the AFCON trophy. We can do it. Go for gold!”

Ghana kicks off its campaign on Tuesday against Uganda in Port Gentil. Other opponents in Ghana’s group are Egypt and Mali.
