The family of former President John Mahama is impressing upon him not to contest the Presidency in 2020.

According to the family, Mr. Mahama has given enough to the NDC, and it is time for him to take a bow from local politics.

The comment by the family comes on the back of early calls by some leading figures in the NDC that Mahama must lead them again for the next presidential and parliamentary polls, which comes off in four years.

The former President lost the December 2016 polls to President Akufo-Addo by some 1.5 million votes, the worst defeat any Ghanaian leader has suffered since 1992.

Speaking to the media, a younger brother of the former president, Ibrahim Mahama said the family is advising their kinsman against a comeback.

“John has given his all in politics  to the NDC and Ghana and we think it is just fair that we allow him to rest.  We were very supportive and instrumental in convincing him to partner Prof. Mills, and when the time came for  him to contest for President, we supported and advised him to go for it…now we have advised him not to make a comeback in 2020,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mr. Mahama who is currently helping to resolve the political impasse in The Gambia, has given indications that he will be focusing his energies, in the years ahead, on the international arena.
