The Volta region branch of the governing New Patriotic Party has set in motion processes for the selection of new chief executives for all the 25 district assemblies in the region.

To this end, the party has set up a three-member committee in all constituencies to receive and vet applications from interested persons for the job.

The committee which comprises the chairperson of the council of elders, a senior party woman as well as the research and election officer in the constituencies are expected to recommend three suitable candidates after the vetting to the regional party secretariat.

Mr. Joseph Homenya, Volta Regional NPP Secretary who disclosed this to Starr News, said the decision by the party to decentralise the selection of the MMDCEs was to ensure active grassroot participation in governance.

“The process is still ongoing and most of the constituencies have submitted their shortlists of three suitable candidates. So at the regional level, further vetting will be done and a final report forwarded to Accra. It is expected to end by Wednesday…and the names of qualified candidates will be submitted to the national party office,” Mr. Homenya told Starr news.

He added: “We have decentralized the process to the constituency levels so that the grassroot can come out with their own competent candidate to lead them in the district. And to ensure fairness, we asked the vetting committees to provide reasons for the disqualification of any candidate.”

President Nana Akufo-Addo is expected to announce his MMDCE nominees by the start of March 2017.
