Togo President, Faure Gnassingbè has been elected the new chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

President Gnassingbè takes over from Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

The Togolese leader became the new ECOWAS President on Sunday, 4 June, 2017 at the 51st Ordinary Session of the Heads of ECOWAS in Monrovia, Liberia.

Mr Gnassingbe will head the sub-regional body for the next 12 months.
