The Minister of Health, Kweku Agyemang-Manu, has said financial clearance has been given for 130 doctors to be posted to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.

They are to replace the over 100 doctors who left the facility after completing their houseman ship.

The move follows decision by management of KATH to suspend new emergency admissions due to acute shortage of doctors at the facility.

A statement by the Medical Director of the hospital Dr Yaw Ampong Adu-Arko read in part that: “In view of the significant reduction in the number of doctors at the hospital it is scaling down on its non-emergency medical services with immediate effect.”

Reacting to the development, Mr. Agemang-Manu told Accra-based Class FM that the Ministry is stepping in to ensure that the facility continues to offer quality health delivery to residents in the region.

“We have actually allocated 130 doctors, we’ve got financial clearance for them to replace those that are leaving and they are going to come from beginning of October.

“But then those there who should stay on until these new doctors come to replace them, about 15 of them have vacated their post and they are saying that they wouldn’t work with Komfo Anokye Hospital so they are going to wait for postings at other facilities and that is what is causing the problem,” he stated.
