Former President John Mahama has said the National Democratic Congress’ humiliating performance in the 2016 election was because the party is conspicuously divided in the Central region.

“The Party in Central Region is divided and that was one of the reasons why we lost,” Mahama said on Sunday while addressing supporters of the NDC in the region after the party’s Unity Walk.

Urging the party in the swing region to unite, former president Mahama who took the media to the cleaners for being lenient on the Akufo-Addo government said: “Whether or not I’ll be the presidential candidate in 2020, we’ll work very hard to win the Central Region.”

He added: “I know in 2020, Central Region will swing back to NDC and we’ll win the elections. You cannot win the National Elections in Ghana without winning Central Region.”

Calling for a united front going into the 2020 elections, he urged that whoever gets the nod of the party should be well supported saying “NDC is a big family.”

He said he does not have a problem with his colleagues who had declared their intentions to lead the party in the 2020 and that it was premature for him to declare his intention of joining the flagbearer race.
