The Executive Director of the Institute of Democratic Governance (IDEG) Dr. Emmanuel Akwetey has called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to dissolve the Board of the Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT).
His call comes in the wake of the corruption scandal that has rocked the transport company.
The company’s Board last week ordered its Managing Director Bennet Aboagye and his personal assistant Yiadom Kesse to proceed on leave following Starr News’ revelation of some financial malpractices at the company.
The MD has been accused of breaching several procurement laws in the acquisition of some 300 buses since taking over the company over a year ago. Also, he is being accused of trying to bribe a whistle blower together with a leading member of the governing New Patriotic Party, Dr. Amoako Tuffuor with ¢40,000.00
He has denied any wrongdoing, describing the allegations as a blackmail.
Commenting on happenings at the state transport company on Starr Today Monday, Dr. Akwetey said: “If I were the president, I will fire the board.”
Also touching on the troubles emanating from a massive salary-cut exercise ongoing at the company, the IDEG Executive Director said: “You must have objective basis for increasing salaries but you can’t increase salaries on political conditions and discriminate against one or the other because it affects the stability of the institution.”
“You can’t run MMT as a political business,” he added.
