Sefwi-Wiawso has been selected by President Akufo-Addo as the capital town of the newly created Western North region.

The President made the announcement at the Jubilee House Friday.

The region was carved out of the Western region after a referendum supervised by the Electoral Commission was held in the area.  So far, four out of the six newly created regions have had their capital towns announced by the President.

Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has said the decision over which town is chosen as capital for the respective newly created regions is the prerogative of the President.

According to him, the decision is not dependent on the land size, history or resources of a town, but the perspective of the President.

“The choice of the capital is the prerogative of the president. It is not the land size or the history of the place. The decision is with the president but of course in consultation with the key stakeholders,”Oppong Nkrumah told Francis Abban on the Morning Starr Wednesday.

The comment comes on the back of the chaos that occurred in Salaga Tuesday after some youth burnt the ruling party’s office in the area over government decision to choose Damongo as regional capital for the new Savannah region.

The angry rampaging youth also chased out the constituency chairman claiming that they are disappointed by the President’s decision.
