Authorities of the University of Education Winneba have asked students to vacate the school by 6pm Thursday, March 14, after students went on rampage for the successive day.

A lecturer who spoke to Starr News said the decision is to restore calm and forestall any further damage to school property.

The decision was taken after the police fired warning shots in an attempt to disperse demonstrating students of the University.

The students who are demonstrating at the University’s north campus over what they say are the unjustified dismissal of a number of lecturers supervising students project work, have caused some destruction at the Junior Common Room and smashed the windscreen of the Students Representative Council bus.

They have also destroyed a notice board.

Information gathered by Starr News at the scene indicates that in the ensuing melee, about five students have been rushed to the hospital with injuries and one reportedly dead.

The demonstration by the students is also to press their demands for the dismissal of the Vice Chancellor, Rev. Prof. Afful-Broni.

The students and lecturers are accusing him of maladministration.

Speaking to Starr News, a student journalist, Christian Larbi said two students have been arrested in the ensuing chaos.

According to him, the police targeted the students with rubber bullets leading to injuries.
