A suspected arson attack on a major gas pipeline at Tema was foiled by security officers Sunday.

The situation which could have resulted in an explosion and caused disruption in Ghana’s power distribution has raised concerns over security at the heart of Ghana’s power generation enclave.

Some unknown persons attempted burning the pipelines belonging to Cirrus Oil services. The latest attack is the second in two weeks after pylons belonging to GRIDCO was hacked down by some unknown persons.

Speaking to Journalists, head of security for GRIDCO, Major Lawrence Appiah Rtd. said the recurrent breaches demands more stringent measures to deal with the situation.

“We are not going to sit down and allow it so we have asked the National Security, Police, Soldiers, BNI all assisting us. Three days ago they attempted again but our security guard saw them and gave our soldiers a heads up so we chased them and they run away.

“They had already lit the fire, trying to burn the fuel lines in the ground to cause a possible explosion in the enclave.”

Meanwhile, works are ongoing to remount the hacked down pylon that occurred two weeks ago.

Parts of the country were left in darkness after some assailants smeared chemicals unto some pylons before hacking one down.

Investigations, however, by both GRIDCO and the police are still ongoing.
