Ride-hailing company Uber has denied reports one of its drivers is being held as a suspect in connection with the kidnapping of two Canadian nationals in Kumasi.
The police in Kumasi held an Uber driver Thursday as they tailgate kidnappers of two Canadian women aged 19 and 20, who were abducted on Tuesday.
Crack detectives working on the case are said to be having important chat with the Uber driver whose cooperation can assist in constructing the developments that could lead up to the eventual abduction of the Canadians.
Reacting to the development, Uber said the driver is only assisting with investigations but not being held as an accomplice.
“The Police has confirmed to us that our driver is not being treated as a suspect,” Francesca Uriri, Head of Communication Uber West Africa told the media Friday in Accra.
The unidentified gang reportedly stopped and bundled the two – Bailen Chitty, 19 years and Lauren Patricia Catherine, 20 years – at gunpoint at about 8:30 P.M. at Ahodwo, Kumasi Royal Gulf Club at 8:25 pm on June 4.
According to Police, investigations to track and rescue the girls started immediately the information got to them.
