Security analyst Adam Bonah

Security analyst Adam Bona has taken a swipe at Minority member of Parliament for Bawku Central Mahama Ayariga over his claim that security equipment for the military could negotiated and purchased from the internet.

The Minority member made the suggestion when he raised concerns over the budget allotted for the purchase of Night Vision Binoculars and Monoculars for the Ghana Armed Forces.

Speaking on the Alert show, Mr. Bona said no serious nation purchases such sensitive equipment from the internet.

“I have seen reports in the public domain talking about this equipment could have been purchased on Amazone or eBay for $1,000 and when I saw that I realized we were in serious trouble. Because no serious country will want to purchase counter-intelligence equipment or security equipment for its security operatives and will go to Amazone or would want to do a comparison with prices on Amazon, it doesn’t happen anywhere,” he said.

He stressed: “Go to the US, British Embassy and ask them or go to the Pentagon or Scotland Yard and ask them the software they are using, the kind of machinery they are using who produced them? They have some specifications that are not readily available to the general public, they do that for a very good reason. They do that because you don’t want the bad guys to know what you’re using, if they get to know then you’re no longer going to be on top of your game”.

The budgeted $11,040,425 is a down payment to the supplier FInanciere DUC, Luxembourg after a contract was signed with government of Ghana.

According to Parliament’s Finance Committee, the equipment and accessories will be used by the military to defend the territorial waters of Ghana.

The Committee had previously proposed $66 million but had to divide the project into three phases – each due to funding challenges.

Each equipment is expected to cost $6,850.
