A third-year General Arts student of WBM Senior High School in Akyem Old Tafo has been trapped dead in a galamsey pit.

The deceased student, Alfred Asiedu, 23, who was on vacation at his hometown in Akyem Apampatia in Atewa West District reportedly got drowned in an abandoned galamsey pit when returning from the bush after harvesting cocoyam leaves to prepare stew.

An official of NADMO, Asiedu Doe, told Starr News “Yesterday we were at the office and we got the message so we rushed to the scene and found that the body had been retrieved so we sent the body to the CHAD mortuary with the help of the police.”

The late Asiedu was an orphan who couldn’t go to Secondary school due to poverty but took advantage of the Free Senior High School Policy to enrol in School.

A Unit Committee Member at Akyem Apampatia, Geoson Owusu Okyere, tells Starr News, the community is inundated with abandoned mining pits threatening the lives of residents.
