The National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI), as part of measures, to empower journalists to uphold best practices, ethical standards and responsible journalism, has trained over 30 journalists in the Ashanti regional capital, Kumasi.

The journalists who were drawn from mostly electronic media were taken through educative, insightful and practical sessions on interviewing skills and information access, journalism and directional practice as well as television news and radio presenting.

The 10-day journalism workshop was held in partnership with the DW Akademie of Germany.

Speaking to Ultimate News at a short graduation ceremony at the Christian Service University College on Friday, the Rector of NAFTI, Dr. Samuel Anyetei Nai underscored the need for journalists to be professional in their reportage.

He was happy at the level of enthusiasm, participants had shown through the training to learn and undo the negative practices associated with their work.

The NAFTI Rector meanwhile raised red flags about the seeming disconnect between practitioners and the values of the profession.

According to the National Communications Authority (NCA), there were 61 authorized radio stations in the Ashanti region, as at end of the third quarter of 2017.

“The growth in the media has not been matched by corresponding and purposeful development of the policies, human resource and services that will bring the full benefit of these communication media to the people.”

“The broad objective of NAFTI in organizing workshops for media practitioners is to help the country develop the necessary human resource and infrastructure to derive the utmost benefit in the development of the communication sector”, he added.

Dr. Nai further intimated the Kumasi project, was to fulfill the Institute’s aim of reaching out to prospective students and media practitioners who live outside of the Greater Accra region want access to accredited and well-resourced media training institutions.

At the end of the training, successful participants took home certificates and other deserving awards for their dedication, time, support and commitment.
