A dog has tested positive for the coronavirus in Hong Kong, suggesting for the first time that pet animals can become infected.

The dog, named Pomeranian, lives with own Yvonne Chow Hau Yee, who had previously been diagnosed with the virus.

A spokesperson confirmed the dog’s “nasal and oral cavity samples were tested weak positive to COVID-19 virus”.

Officials will conduct further tests to confirm whether the dog, which is not yet exhibiting any symptoms, has really been infected with the disease, or if it was a result of environmental contamination of its mouth and nose.
