The Kwahu Traditional Council in the Eastern Region has announced a lockdown of the traditional area as a measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The directive is binding on all five Municipal and District Assemblies under it. These are Kwahu West, Kwahu East, Kwahu South, Afram Plains North and South.

The decision was taken after lengthy discussions On March 25, 2020, by Kwahu Covid-19 committee made up of Chiefs, Medical Doctors, other health care professionals and Municipal and District Chief Executives in the traditional area.

A statement issued by Registrar Samuel Tuffuor on behalf of Kwahuhene and President of Kwahu Traditional Council, Daasebre Akuamoah Agyapong II stated that “all natives of Kwahu who currently live outside Kwahu, should endeavour to continue to stay wherever they may be, in the weeks to come and postpone all planned visits to Kwahu till further notice”.

Again “Kwahus living in Kwahu should remain in Kwahu. No travelling outside of Kwahu until the pandemic is contained”

The statement further said “there is a large population of aged in Kwahu and they are vulnerable. Therefore let us act responsibly since an outbreak will be devastating”.

The statement urged residents to strictly adhere to the directive issued by the President which included suspension of social gatherings.

As at the 26 March 2020, a total of 132 covid-19 cases including (3) fatalities have been recorded in Ghana. All victims of these confirmed cases are being managed in isolation”.

It has been predicted that the situation may worsen in the next few weeks.

Many individuals and groups including Ghana Medical Association(GMA) have called on the President  to immediately declare a nationwide Lockdown to avert crises.

President Akufo-Addo on Thursday said government is considering the lockdown proposal.
