Military and police personnel on Tuesday Morning shut down the Suame Market on the orders of the Municipal Chief Executive Osei Bobie Boahin.

The action was necessitated by the flagrant disregard for social distancing and laid down preventive protocols by the traders.

Per a meeting held between the Municipal Assembly and the Market queens of the various food commodity clusters, traders for each food item were to agree on daily shifts to avoid a huge congregation of traders of the same commodity at their designated spots.

Speaking on the Morning Starr, Ultimate News’ Isaac Bediako Justice reported that all such arrangements failed to materialize compelling the shutdown orders.

“In the meeting, it was agreed that if for instance there are tomato sellers, ten should come for one day for another batch to come the following day so that they can observe social distancing but they did not heed this call,” Isaac explained.

He, however, noted that the MCE is scheduled to reconvene a meeting with the various Market queens in the Suame Market to redesign a workable plan to reopen the markets.

The directive was however expected as the Suame Market area has been tabled by the office of the Ashanti Regional Minister as one of the recalcitrant spots in the enforcement of the COVID -19 lockdown measures.
