The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) says it expects government to heed to their demand of reverting to their normal passenger capacity.
The drivers and owners of vehicles are lamenting what they say is huge financial losses as a result of the current system which requires them to halve their passenger capacity to ensure social distancing due to coronavirus.
Speaking to Starr News, the Chairperson of GPRTU Kwame Kumah said: “now with the measures and explanation put in place, with the safety protocols we can take the normal passengers that we take”.
According to him, when their vehicles develop problems, they do not get money to repair them.
“We have petitioned the Transport Ministry to, as a matter of urgency review the directive,” he said.
He added that they are pleading with government to allow them to go back to the usual number of passengers before COVID-19 so they can feed their families.
On March 30, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) urged drivers to comply with government directive on social distancing in vehicles.
“Members are kindly requested to comply with this new measure and ensure that in addition, all transport terminals have adequate running water basins, soap and sanitizers to enable passengers to wash and sanitize their hands before boarding,” it said.
“We count on all commercial vehicle drivers and passengers to cooperate with these measures to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. We are in this together. Stay safe, stay clean and stay calm,” the statement advised.
