Insanitary conditions at the Nana Katabra Junior High School in the Essikado-Ketan Constituency in Western Region is expected to improve following the completion and handing over of an 8-seater toilet facility by the GNPC Foundation.
According to goal 6 of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals, by 2030, access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene must be achieved by all and an end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls in vulnerable situations
It estimated that every year, over 800,000 people, including more than 340,000 children under five in Africa, die from diseases caused by unsafe water, inadequate sanitation, or poor hygiene.”
The oncoming of the facility is intended to provide the best of comfort for pupils as they attend to ‘nature’s call’ and ultimately enhance personal hygiene among the studying community.
The school children had before then been using a dilapidated toilet built with wood.
Speaking during the handing over ceremony on Friday, June 5 at the School, Executive Director for the GNPC Foundation Dr Dominic Eduah recounted a call was made on the organisation by the Member of Parliament, Joe Ghartey, for assistance in getting the school a befitting toilet facility.
He said he trusted that beneficiaries will maintain the facility to ensure it is used for a much longer period.
Head of the School, Christin Forson, said she was very appreciative of the intervention.
Constituency Secretary for the New Patriotic Party – Essikado-Ketan, Thomas Amoah on behalf of the MP urged the school to be guided by a healthy maintenance culture.
He noted that other projects are within the pipeline to ensure an even spread of infrastructure in the Constituency.
