The Volta Regional Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) James Gunu has described the Electoral Commission’s decision to go ahead with the compilation of a new voter register as a ‘democratic suicide mission.’

Mr Gunu made the comments when he addressed journalists at the Electoral Commission’s regional office in Ho, where the EC is piloting the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kit ahead of the expected mass registration exercise.

He believes that the time frame for the registration exercise is unrealistic and could not be done before the 2020 Parliamentary and Presidential elections.

He said: “We are aware that the issue of the compilation of a new Voter register is in court, the C.I has not matured yet and so, let us cross these hurdles and then we would know what to do but as it stands, the Electoral Commission is on a democratic suicide mission.”

Asked whether he would advise his party and its members to take part in the registration exercise should the EC go ahead with it, Mr. Gunu indicated that its premature to make such a determination, while noting, “we are not there yet. We are not there yet as a country.”

The former Akatsi North DCE’s comments reiterate the NDC’s position against the compilation of a new Voter register and the usage of the NIA card for same, as the EC remains adamant.

Meanwhile, the pilot registration exercise in the Volta regional capital has been smooth and expected to end later in the evening.
