The Gender Ministry has condemned the lynching of a 90-year-old-woman at Kafaba in the East Gonja Municipality of the Savanna Region on the accusation of being a witch.

In a statement days after the incident, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection called for immediate investigations and prosecution of all the perpetrators.

The incident happened on Thursday, July 23, 2020 in the East Gonja Municipality.

The old woman whose body has since been deposited at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) mortuary has been identified as Akua Denteh.

The Savannah Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Mr Enoch Adutwum Bediako said some more police officers have been detailed to the area to effect the arrest of the suspects who subjected the victim to severe beatings which led to her death.

The Gender Ministry added that “the Ministry, on behalf of the Government and People of Ghana, unreservedly condemns this barbaric act, and calls for immediate investigations and prosecution of all the perpetrators of this gruesome murder in accordance with our laws.

“It certainly cannot be said that such antiquated mentality could still be with us in this 21st century where the world and Ghana in particular has made significant strides in upholding the rights and dignity of women.”
