Chief of Staff Akosua Frema Opare has directed all ministries and agencies of government to prioritise locally assembled vehicles if there is the need to purchase cars for official use.

It comes global automobile giant Volkswagen started producing vehicles in the country.

The auto manufacturing company in 2018 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the government of Ghana. The agreement was to begin the process of establishing an assembling plant in the country to serve the West African sub-regional market.

The assembling plant is expected to produce about 5,000 units of vehicles every year, There are also plans to increase production depending on the market demand.

Volkswagen already builds vehicles in Kenya. The company also recently opened another car plant in Rwanda as part of its expansion project in East Africa.
