A prisons officer and two other persons have died in a fatal accident on the Akyem Asafo stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway in the Eastern Region.

The deceased prison officer has been identified as Faustina Bekoe. The others are Juliana Nyanteh 63, a passanger and a pedestrian Thomas Agyare, 31.

The accident occurred on Saturday August 1,2020 at about 11:30 am.

The accident vehicle, a Nissan Urvan mini bus with registration number GW 7022-20 was being driven by 53-year-old Barfour Asare with passengers on board.

However, on reaching a section of the road at Akim Asafo near Suhum the driver explained the rear offside tyre of his vehicle got burst, hence, lost control of the steering wheel and the vehicle knocked and killed the male adult pedestrian. The car then crashed into a stationary Man Diesel truck with registration number GE 4129 X which was parked at a roadside mechanic shop.

The female prison officer who was on board the vehicle died on the spot.

Many other passengers sustained varied degrees of injuries and were rushed to Kibi Government hospital, Akim Asafo Health Center and Hawa Memorial hospital at Akyem Osiem for treatment but Juliana Nyanta 63, was pronounced dead on arrival at Osiem.

The bodies of the deceased persons have been deposited at the Suhum Government hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

The acting Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Command, Sergeant Francis Gomado confirmed the accident to Starr News .

He said the accident vehicle has been towed for testing while awaiting for the driver to be discharged to assist in investigation.
