Former Member of Parliament for Damongo Mutawakilu Adam says Ghanaians must expect more taxes in the wake of the current power crisis in the country.
According to him, this is due to the weak financial position facing the nation’s electricity transmission company, Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo).
GRIDCo has asked Ghanaians to expect a load-shedding timetable in the coming weeks due to overdue maintenance/replacement of obsolete equipment.
Mr Mutawakilu revealed that the $190m government was supposed to receive to complete most of the energy projects will not come, hence the need to look elsewhere for the money.
Speaking on the Morning Starr with Francis Abban on Tuesday, the IES fellow said “GRIDCo knows they’re supposed to do their maintenance at a certain time but they can’t because of their weak financial position.”
“If GRIDCo was on its feet, it would have been able to carry out its projects as of now. The $190m that would have come to complete most of these energy projects will not come so we have to find money elsewhere.”
He accused the government of playing propaganda with the matter “government played propaganda and it will catch up with us. We have to look for money to pay so we have to expect more taxes. The debt is still staring us in the face. Have you heard Akufo-Addo talk about ESLA? They are imposing more taxes.”
He has, however, backed the calls for a load-shedding timetable saying “at least a timetable will help Ghanaians plan. It’s very important that they come out with a timetable and admit that we have a power challenge in the country.”
“With a timetable, it’s a general acceptance that there’s a power challenge in Ghana.”
