A member of staff has been killed and a number of students abducted during a raid on a university in the northern state of Kaduna.

A police spokesperson said many people had been kidnapped from their dormitories – including male and female students. The exact number is still not clear.

The Kaduna state commissioner for internal security, Samuel Aruwan, confirmed that a staff member had been killed during the raid.

Kidnappings for ransom by armed criminal gangs have become common in recent months, with more than 800 students abducted since December.

Most have been released after negotiations but 29 students kidnapped last month from a forestry college are still being held.
