Angry construction workers of Shimizu Dai Nippon at Assin Fosu in the Central Region who are demonstrating over poor conditions of service have allegedly attacked the Divisional Police Commander for the Area, ACP Augustine Luguyare.

The Police Commander sustained some injuries from the attack by the protestors from Shimizu Dai Nippon, a road construction firm working on the National Trunk Road (8) stretching from Assin Fosu to Assin Praso.

The workers who are demanding better working conditions of service and an increment of their remuneration blocked the road from commuters.

Speaking in an interview with ACP Augustine Luguyare, he told EIB Network’s Central Regional Correspondent Yaw Boagyan that the Police in an attempt to clear the road provoked the angry protesters who began throwing stones and objects at the Officers.

“We heard they had blocked the road with stones so when we arrived and in advising them to clear the road, they started throwing stones at us. We were not there to arrest anyone but rather to bring the situation under control,” he disclosed.

Meanwhile, the angry protestors described the approach from the Police as rude and aggressive in protecting a Foreign-Owned Firm that is maltreating them.

“Our salary issues are not the best, so when we were protesting then suddenly the Police came and began firing gunshots and pepper spray indiscriminately at us,” the workers disclosed.
