The Asamankese Divisional Police Command in the Eastern region has commenced investigation into alleged extortion and planting of marijuana by some five police officers on duty on the Asamankese road.

This follows a viral video involving a half naked man identified as Tamimu invoking curses on the police officers for allegedly extorting Ghc500 from him after planting marijuana in his car.

According to Tamimu, on January 2, 2022, he was driving a DV plated Toyota Corolla saloon car belonging to his friend one Nketiah Frank from Anum Apapam to Asamankese to buy a car tyre for his private vehicle between 4:00pm to 5:00pm. On reaching sukruntu, Community section of the road close to Asamankese, he met a five-man Police patrol team on board a white service pick -up vehicle with registration number GP 2517.

The Patrol team stopped and searched his car.

He said one of the Police officers said he found a wrap of suspected Indian hemp on the back seat of the car which Tamimu believes was planted by the police officers.

Tamimu was subsequently arrested and allegedly assaulted. He said it took a friend called Abu who appeared at the scene to intervene.

Abu allegedly paid an amount of GHC500 on behalf of his friend before he was released by the Police.

The angry victim decided to invoke a curse in a local river against the police officers to seek fast-tracked natural justice .

The Asamankese Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Mr. Felix Apedo accompanied by his Divisional Crime Officer, ASP Mr. C.T. Apronti traced the victim of the alleged extortion to Anum Apapam.

They took a statement from the victim Taminu,31, unemployed.

Investigation was extended to the five accused police officers led by Chief Inspector William Tawiah. The others include Sargeant Ibrahim Iddi, Sargent Richard Otoo, Sargeant Samuel Kumah and Corporal Richard Kpeanaah.

They however denied planting the suspected Indian Hemp on the complaint but admitted collecting 450 Cedis from the victim through his friend Abu before releasing him.
