The Ghana Revenue Service (GRA) has announced its preparedness to implement the controversial Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy) when Parliament passes it.

The government has proposed an electronic levy of 1.75% of transfers to help reduce the country’s debt and deficit while enabling it to fund the growing demands of the Ghanaian people.

The e-levy has become the subject of public debate following the Minority National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) disapproval of it in parliament.

However, a letter signed by the Commissioner-General, Rev. Dr. Ammishadai Owusu-Amoah, and sighted by Starrfm.com.gh, said banks are to be ready for the implementation of the levy when given the green light.

“As you may be aware, the Electronic Transfer Levy Bill is under consideration by Parliament. While we await the passage of the Bill into Law, I wish to inform you to hold yourself in readiness for the implementation of the levy in three (3) phases as soon as the Bill is passed into law.”

He continued “The GRA is currently developing a monitoring platform for the full implementation of the E-levy and would be inviting you to collaborate with its Technical Team in this respect.”
