The Sekondi Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) has closed down a public toilet allegedly run by the Constituency Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Takoradi.

This was part of an unannounced exercise by the assembly to check environmental health standards.

The exercise was undertaken by the Justice and Security subcommittee of the assembly together with the environmental health unit and metro guards.

The team at their first stop, closed the Amanful East public place of convenience, which is run by Prince Arthur aka Chairman Bonnah who is the Takoradi NPP Constituency Chairman who also doubles as the Assembly member of Amanful East.

The Sub Metro Chairman of the Assembly was discovered to have connected the effluent of the public toilet to the main drainage.

The STMA task force also closed down another place of convenience along the Cape Coast station for the same offence.

The Assembly had to close down an eatery at the Cape Coast station and further asked the operators of the food joint, Daavi Ama to close down the kitchen due to the unhygienic conditions she was operating in.

The enforcement exercise moved further to the Best Western Atlantic Hotel, where a week’s ultimatum was issued to the management to ensure a leakage at their storage facility is fixed or risk closure.

Mr. Abdul Kareem Hudu who is the head of the Environmental Health Department at the Assembly in an interview with Empire News said his office will continue such exercises to ensure public safety.
