The family of alleged military shooting victim in the Sabon-gari town of Bawku Municipality in the Upper East Region is demanding justice after a middle-aged woman was shot dead by unidentified assailants suspected to be soldiers.

Following the murder of Dauda Mariama, 47, the relatives have condemned the incident demanding immediate justice.

Mariama’s (deceased) husband claimed she was shot dead while walking from her room to his room to serve him food.

Sumaya Aginga, the deceased’s daughter, alleged that her mother was shot at close range in her home when women are not involved in the age-long Bawku conflict between Kusaasis and Mamprusis.

Sumaya, similarly called for justice for her deceased mother.

“We were looking for someone to come and take her to the hospital but we didn’t get. They didn’t even bother to come and pick her; we were thinking that if they are soldiers and mistakenly shot her, they will pick her to the hospital but they didn’t do that. They were rather picking up the bullet shells to cover up for their deeds. She’s our mother and our everything, now that she’s gone who is going to take care of us and the children.
They have killed us all. How can soldiers come to separate fight and they are killing our mothers? What crime have we committed? We are pleading on the government to come to our aid and seek justice for our mother because my mother doesn’t deserve this kind of death.”

Unconfirmed reports indicate that more than 15 people have been killed in 5 days after renewed clashes in the enclave.

Thousands of people have fled the town, and many are still hesitant to return following the renewed clashes by the feuding factions.

Meanwhile, the Commanding Officer of the 11th Mechanised Infantry Battalion, Lt Col. Minta Agyeman has said the alleged shooting incident is currently under investigation.

He added that calm has since been restored in Bawku and its environs, urging residents to be law-abiding and assist the security officers in the delivery of their duties.
