Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang Manu

The minority in Parliament has described as a disaster failure by the government to procure some 3 vaccines for babies.

Parents of unvaccinated babies are being turned away from health facilities over the shortage of the vaccines.

Vaccines for measles, polio, and tetanus have not been available for a while now due to financial challenges.

Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman Manu who was billed to answer questions from MPs over the development had to leave parliament after the Speaker directed he returns later since there was no space for him today.

Addressing the media, Ranking member for the committee on Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh disclosed the problem could get worse as Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, GAVI is threatening to withdraw about 10 vaccines it supplies to Ghana over indebtedness.

The Juaboso MP charged the minister to ensure vaccines are available to babies immediately.

“So this is a sensitive matter, it’s an emergency issue. We’re not so much interested in big English, we’re not so much interested in complex explanation, what we’re interested in and I’m expecting to hear is that at the end of the day the Minister announces that they have taken delivery of vaccines and for that matter tomorrow they’ve started the distribution of vaccines.”
