Ghana’s first and only female Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr. Penelope Adinku has revealed her next professional move is to specialize in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery, preferably in India.

In an exclusive interview on The Natalie Fort Show on GHOneTV, she intimated she is soon looking to leave Ghana to India for a couple of years and is only waiting for an admission letter, sponsorship, and approval from Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

“I seek to travel to a high volume center where many Pediatric cases are handled to gain more experience; India has such centers. Upon completion, I will return to Ghana and share the knowledge acquired. Currently, I am in a state of transition, as I work towards becoming a Consultant. My ultimate dream is to be one of the best Pediatric Cardiac Surgeons in the world, I truly believe children are our future, and I’m particularly passionate about treating them.” Dr. Adinku noted.

Dr. Penelope Adinku has long been celebrated as Ghana’s first and only female Cardiothoracic Surgeon, she describes her journey into the field as a calling.

“People are often in disbelief when they learn I work as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon; due to my gender, appearance, and unassuming demeanor. There is a lot of work to be done to disabuse the minds of the public, as it pertains to women in male-dominated fields” she stressed.

Dr. Penelope Adinku called on women aiming to work in the medical field, particularly in Cardiothoracic Surgery to seek to bring something worthwhile to the table, and consistently sharpen their skill.

The Natalie Fort Show airs every Wednesday at 9:30 PM on GHOneTV, and streams on Facebook and Twitter.
