The Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has stated that removing coaches is not the best remedy for Ghana’s football woes.
Mr. Bagbin’s comments come on the back of Black Stars’ elimination from the on-going 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Ghana’s hopes of advancing to the knockout stages were slim after a 2-2 draw against Mozambique on Monday night.
The elimination was confirmed when Cameroon, coming from behind, defeated Gambia.
As a result of the abysmal performance of the Black Stars at the AFCON, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) took a decision and sack the coach, Chris Hughton.
But addressing Parliament’s fourth meeting on Tuesday, Mr. Bagbin emphasized that sacking coaches from the national football team, the Black Stars, won’t resolve their poor performance.
He urged stakeholders to collaborate on devising a comprehensive plan to address the country’s football challenges.
“The Black Stars and their handlers must know that they represent more than just a football team. They are a symbol of our national pride, cohesion and resilience. They must therefore endeavor to rise from the ashes of these setbacks and demonstrate to the world the true power of Ghana’s football. It is high time we huddle together to discuss the current state of Ghana’s football and consider a comprehensive strategy for the future.
“Sacking of coaches is not the panacea to the challenges. We must evaluate our football infrastructure, youth development programs, coaching standards and administrative structures to identify areas for improvement,” Mr. Bagbin stated.
