The president of Nigeria Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressing nigerian’s on Sunday evening August 4 urged for protestor to stop the protest and seek for dialogue to have their concerns heard as the #EndBadGovernance protests has seen the report of up to 13 deaths.
In addressing the country the president Tinibu expressed his commitment to listening to the concerns of the protesters, but emphasized the need to maintain public order and protect the lives and property of citizens. “I hereby urge the protesters and the organizers to suspend any further protests and create room for dialogue”
“I speak to you today heart and sense of responsibility, aware of the turmoil of violent protests unleashed in some of our states. Notably, among the protesters were young Nigerians who desired a better, and more progressive country where their dreams, hopes, and personal aspirations would be fulfilled. I am especially pained by the loss of life in Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna and other states, the destruction of facilities in some states, and the war-torn looting of supermarkets and shops, contrary to the promise of protest organizers that the protests would be peaceful across the country. The destruction of properties set us back as a nation, as scarred resources would be again used to restore. I commiserate with the families and relations of those who have died in the protests. We must stop further bloodshed, violence, and destruction.”
He also hinted that the government would not condone reports of looting that had characterized the protests.
“As the President of this country, I must ensure public order in line with the constitutional oath to protect the lives and property of every citizen. Our government will not stand idly or a few at a destination apart. Under these circumstances, I hereby urge the protesters and the organizers to suspend any further protests and create room for dialogue.”
