Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) and the Ministry of Labour and Employment Relations (MLER) have successfully negotiated an agreement to bring an end to the nationwide strike on August 19, 2024.

Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, affirmed the government’s commitment to the resolution by stating, “I am appending my signature to signify the fact that I am committed or the government team is committed to that which we have agreed to in this document.” This emphasizes the government’s dedication to resolving the factors that contributed to the protracted industrial action.

The CETAG leader also assured the public of the Association’s commitment to the agreed terms, stating, “On behalf of over 2,000 members of CETAG, I also want to assure the media and all that are here that CETAG is also committed to what has been put on this paper and therefore I wish to sign.”

This agreement is set to clear the way for the resumption of academic activities, with an official announcement expected following CETAG’s upcoming council meeting. Moreover, the government has committed to paying CETAG members’ July and August 2024 salaries by the end of this month, further signaling a commitment to restoring normalcy in the education sector.

This resolution is a significant milestone in resolving the impasse and is expected to bring much-needed relief to both educators and students affected by the prolonged strike.
