The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has issued a public announcement to lessen disruptions to customers during the meter replacement programs being rolled out by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCO).
“We want to ensure that customers are protected and that their rights are respected during this process,” said the Executive Secretary of the PURC.
According to the Commission, customers must be vigilant when dealing with utility personnel.
“Please request the utility company’s identification (ID) of personnel who visit your premises to replace your meter,” advised the PURC. “This is crucial to ensure that you are dealing with authorized personnel and to prevent any potential fraud or scams.”
The PURC has also stressed the importance of documentation during the meter replacement process. “Request the personnel to take a Final Reading of your old meter in your presence,” said the Commission. “This ensures that your old meter reading is accurately recorded and will help prevent any billing disputes.”
Also, the PURC has advised customers to ensure that the personnel completes a utility meter replacement form in their presence. “Ensure that the personnel captures your old meter number and the Final Reading accurately and clearly,” said the Commission. “This will help resolve any billing disputes that may arise between you and the utility company.”
The PURC has urged customers to sign and retain a copy of the meter replacement form for their records. “We want to ensure that customers have a smooth transition during this process,” said the Executive Secretary. The announcement was made public on August 29, 2024.
