Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has emphasized that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will fight galamsey when elected.

This comes after Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) announced in a statement dated August 30, that illegal mining activities in the Pra River have caused major delays in the water supply to the people of Cape Coast, Elmina, and nearby areas in the Central Region.

Speaking at the second edition of the NDC’s press briefing on its 2024 manifesto, Mr. Ablakwa voiced concerns about the matter and emphasized how quickly action must be taken.

“Ghana Water Limited has put out statements that at this rate, in the next few years, we will have to import water. They [Ghana Water Limited] say the Pra River is gone. The turbidity levels are at a level that does not even allow them to treat water. So as we speak, Central, Western regions, and parts of Greater Accra, have a water crisis,” he expressed.

Mr. Ablakwa highlighted the need for a government that is prepared to take immediate action, criticizing the existing administration’s incompetence in handling the problem. “Only the NDC manifesto is pledging a ruthless combatting of this menace which poses an existential threat. You need a new government that will come and confront this menace because it doesn’t make sense. A whole government with a national security apparatus and all of them are saying that they are helpless,” he emphasized.
