Social media influencer Kaly Jay has joined the protest, urging swift action to combat illegal mining (galamsey) and secure the release of detained citizens.
The demonstration, which drew supporters from diverse groups, focused on two critical demands: “Stop galamsey now” and “Free the citizens.” Kaly Jay stressed that, “I feel they’ve [#StopGalamseyNow Protesters] not been treated right so I am here to advocate for their freedom.”
In an interview with GH One TV, on October 3, 2024, Kaly Jay stressed the severe environmental damage caused by galamsey, noting, “Based on research, as of 2021, 60% of our water bodies have been destroyed, and six major rivers have been affected.”
The protest was not just about immediate action but also aimed at increasing public awareness. “We are using this demonstration to push for action and educate the people,” Kaly Jay said. He observed that the event had ignited discussions, with many participants asking questions and becoming more aware of the galamsey crisis.
Although Kaly Jay recognized the success of their awareness efforts, he remained hopeful that the government would respond to their calls. “Hopefully, we get there and get results,” he said, expressing optimism about potential policy changes to address both illegal mining and the release of citizens.
