Flag bearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is advocating for the enhanced teaching of the Ga Language to ensure that it does not go extinct.
According to him, since most people who have moved to Accra to settle can live without the speaking of Ga, there seems to be a decline in the learning of the language hence the need to ensure the increase of its teaching.
Dr. Bawumia, who was speaking during a courtesy call on the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II on Thursday, indicated that government must be intentional in guaranteeing the future of Ga heritage in an ever-growing cosmopolitan environment.
“The Ga state hosts the capital of Ghana and because of that, the rest of Ghana is here,” he observed. “But that have implications for the Ga state which we have to take account of in policy. It has implications because land becomes a problem.
“The language is another problem because most of us who are here, we can survive without speaking Ga and that leads to a decline in the language so we have to make sure that Ga is taught in our schools to protect the language,” the NPP Presidential Candidate said.
Dr. Bawumia said it could be “costly” if steps are not taken to bolster Ga education.
