Dr. Asah Asante, a political scientist at the University of Ghana has questioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as an incumbent government for commissioning projects and using them as a campaign.
Speaking on the Morning Starr with Naa Dedei Tettey, Dr. Asah stated that it is an insult to the other political parties contesting with the government in power.
“This is in the sense that the government in power through taxes has financed everything of the state. And because you are the one currently occupying office you are going to use that to campaign against me. You can look at it. That is incumbency abuse we are talking about”, he said.
Dr. Asante based his criticism on the recent and continuous commission of one infrastructure to another by the NPP government.
“What work, what records and what projects did you have until this time? So you are seeing the commissioning of projects around this time. Beautiful ones. No doubt about that. They have done it and they are showcasing it.
“There’s nothing wrong with it. But why should campaigning go on at the same time commissioning is going on? Remember politics is a contest of ideas and a referendum of your work”, he disclosed.
Dr. Asante advised that the government emphasize the areas in which they have performed abysmally.
“They will go to sleep when we are out of elections and come back to deceive voters again when elections are near. We need to find lasting solutions to incumbency abuse in the political system. You need to emphasize those areas you have performed abysmal and faced challenges”, he said
