Vice Presidential Candidate of the Movement for Change, Kwame Owusu Danso has stated that former President John Agyekum Kufuor’s decision to acclaim the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flag bearer, Dr. Bawumia as the best candidate in this year’s election is disrespectful to the Ghanaian people.
In an interview on Morning Starr, Alan Kyerematen’s running mate said the former president had to make the comparisons “properly” in order that the electorate could make “informed decisions” in the polls.
Mr. Danso warned that the current situation the country found itself was not a time for partisanship by the statesman even as he acknowledged that Mr. Kufuor bore allegiance to the ruling NPP.
“Indeed, even in President Kufuor’s administration, all of us are aware that Chief Alan [Kyerematen] played a very important role in the success story of former President Kufuor’s government.
“But to say that Dr. Bawumia is the one who can get us out of this economic doldrum, I think it is disrespectful to the good people of this country, with the greatest of respect to former President Kufuor. We all respect and revere him but this is not the time for him to pander to the whims and caprices of what his political party needs,” Mr. Danso told Lily Mohammed.
Former President Kufuor has come under intense criticism following his full-throated endorsement of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in an interview aired over the weekend.
The two-term head of state told journalists that it was only Dr. Bawumia who could elevate the country and guarantee a prosperous future.
Many opposition politicians have found his support for the NPP presidential candidate distasteful including his former Trade Minister and Presidential Candidate of the Movement for Change, Alan Kyerematen.
He was of the view that Mr. Kufuor was “venturing into dangerous territory”.
