The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama has pledged to lift Koforidua to metropolitan status if he is elected in the December 7 presidential election.
Explaining the reasoning behind the assurance, the former president said the city had expanded by leaps and bounds, making it deserving of such recognition by the government.
“Recently, they [government] revealed they were going to upgrade some district assemblies. We had said in our manifesto that we were going to elevate Koforidua from municipal status to metropolitan status from the looks of its population growth and bustling commercial activities. So when it was announced, I expected Koforidua to be one of those areas to be upgraded but since they did not do it, we will elevate the city to metropolitan status,” he said to cheers at a rally in the New Juaben South Constituency.
He indicated that the elevation would attract ample resources for the Eastern Regional Capital’s development which included infrastructure residents badly need.
Koforidua lies within the New Juaben South Municipality. According to data from the 2021 population census, over 120,000 people reside in the area.
Former President Mahama who is on a tour of the Eastern Region also assured residents of the constituency the next government under his leadership will build a market on par with the Kejetia Market.
