The National Youth Organiser for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has retracted and apologized to Professor Ransford Gyampo over defamatory statements he made.
On Monday, October 28, 2024, Mr. Mustapha issued a press statement accusing Professor Gyampo and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) of using the UTAG strike to disenfranchise students. He further alleged that Professor Gyampo has a record of engaging in inappropriate relationships with students in exchange for grades.
However, after discussions with Professor Gyampo’s lawyers, Salam Mustapha has retracted his statements and issued an apology.
The retraction reads:
“RETRACTION AND APOLOGY TO PROF. RANSFORD GYAMPO
On Monday, October 28, 2024, I issued a press statement alleging that Professor Gyampo was working with the NDC to disenfranchise students, using the UTAG strike action as a decoy. I also indicated that Professor Gyampo was motivated by the promise of a political appointment in a future NDC government. Additionally, I alleged that Professor Gyampo has an international reputation for engaging in relationships with students in exchange for grades.
After being contacted by Professor Gyampo’s lawyers, I have been made aware of the defamatory nature of my statements. As I have no evidence to support the allegations I made, I hereby retract my statements and extend an unqualified apology to Professor Gyampo.
I am ensuring that this retraction and apology is published with the same prominence as my initial statement across all media outlets that previously reported it.
Thank you.”
