Over 500 teachers and students at Galilea M/A JHS in the Ga South Municipality are stranded as a contractor locks the classrooms over unpaid debts owed by GETFund.
Addressing the media, the contractor claimed the project started in 2017 and was completed in 2018, but the debt has still not been paid.
He revealed that the school was initially closed in early October this year, but GETFund pleaded with them to grant a period of two weeks to settle the issue. However, they have not heard from them since then.
“We came here in early November to close down the school, but GETFund pleaded with us to give them two weeks to settle the issue, but to date, we have not heard from them so we came here to close it down,” he noted.
He further explained that there has been an increase in the price of cement since the completion of the project, so the government has to pay their money.
“When we were completing the project, the price of cement was around GH₵ 22, but now the price of cement is around GH₵ 100, so the government owes us a lot. We have to take our money.”
However, they are looking up to GETFund to pay the money so that the students can go back to the classroom.
“We are looking forward for the government to pay us so that we can open the classrooms for the students to learn.”
