The Voice of the Lord Evangelical Church, Akropong District transformed its Sunday service into a mass health screening exercise for congregants and residents of the Amanfro Akuapem community in the Okere District of Ghana’s Eastern Region.
The free health screening, themed “Be in Good Health”, aimed to assist community members, particularly the vulnerable, with health issues such as hypertension, malaria, blood glucose levels, typhoid, and weight management.
The health team, led by Carolyn Pearl Appiah, revealed during the exercise that several individuals tested positive for malaria, hypertension, and arthritis.
“Anti-malaria drugs were administered with clear instructions and new mosquito nets were distributed to pregnant women, nursing mothers, the elderly, and others who tested positive for malaria to help curb future infections,” Appiah stated.
She further noted that every participant’s blood pressure was checked, with most showing high values and a smaller number registering low values. “Known hypertensive patients whose medication had run out were provided with medication and counseling on proper usage,” she added.
Addressing the rising cases of arthritis, Appiah linked the symptoms to certain farming activities and the production of gari and cassava dough in the area. Medications were given, alongside non-pharmacological advice tailored to managing the condition.
In light of the recent cholera outbreaks in Carolyn Appiah stressed the importance of maintaining proper hygiene practices within homes and communities.
District Pastor Samuel Young Appiah emphasized the significance of both physical and spiritual well-being for Christians, urging all believers to prioritize their health. “Regular health check-ups should be a habit for every Christian to know their health status,” he advised, adding that health should be considered before embarking on extended fasting periods.
The event was graced by Nana Tete Odwokwao III, Chief of Amanfro, as the special guest, along with Hon. Henry Prince Owiredu, aspiring NDC parliamentary candidate for Okere. Also in attendance were Koforidua Area Head Apostle Alfred Addo and Deaconess Janet Addo.
