The Diplomatic Corp in Ghana is commending the 2024 Presidential Candidate of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for graciously accepting this year’s presidential election results.
In a letter to the vice-president, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corp, Lebanon Ambassador, Maher Kheir, said the NPP flag bearer’s swift concession was indicative of how high he regarded the nation’s democratic institutions.
He said Dr. Bawumia had made his “statesmanship and love for this country clear” to all.
It will be recalled that the NPP presidential candidate conceded the presidential election to former President John Mahama on the morning of December 8, 2024, the fastest such a concession has been made under the 4th Republic.
Speaking at his residence at the time, Dr. Bawumia asserted that his party’s internal data had pointed out he was not going to be successful in the polls.
Mr. Kheir, who singled out Dr. Bawumia for praise, noted that by accepting the election outcome, he had “reaffirmed the confidence and trust” of the international community in Ghana.
“Your unwavering commitment to the values of democracy, especially through your honorable concession in the recent elections, stands as a testament to your statesmanship and love for this nation. In moments of political transition, it is the strength of character and respect for the democratic process that define a leader.
“Your grace in accepting the outcome is not only a reflection of your integrity but also a profound contribution to Ghana’s enviable democratic credentials, which serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration across the continent.
“The peaceful and dignified manner in which you have conducted yourself underscores the maturity of Ghana’s democracy and the shared responsibility of all leaders to uphold the ideals of peace, unity, and progress,” he wrote to the veep.
The ambassador added that Ghana’s democracy ought to be celebrated “not just as a system” but shared commitment to values that uplift its people and inspire others”.
