The Electoral Commission has highlighted the need for security to protect its staff and ensure the integrity of the aftermath of the electoral process.
In a press briefing today, the EC’s chair Jean Mensa emphasized the urgent need for intervention from the current President H.E Akufo-Addo and the president-elect John Mahama to ensure that the commission is provided with the necessary protection to carry out its constitutional duties.
The chairperson stated that the commission is facing significant threats, particularly as its staff members worked under pressure, some facing direct intimidation and threats of violence.
“We humbly call on President Akufo-Addo as well as the president-elect to intervene in this matter so that the commission is provided with the necessary security and protection to carry out its functions,” the chairperson remarked.
Moreover, the commission made a direct call to the National Election Security Taskforce to assemble and ensure the security of both the EC staff and its sensitive processes.
“We call on the national election security taskforce to come together and put in place arrangements to ensure that our staff and processes are protected and secured in a way that will ensure that the true outcomes of our processes reflect the will of the people, as expressed on the pink sheets,” she said.
The EC has been under pressure in recent days, as tensions surrounding the election results continue to rise. The commission made it clear that any results declared under duress or threat would be considered invalid.
“The declarations made by our staff were made under threats, and we consider them illegal. We will not uphold results made under threats or duress,” Jean Mensa asserted
