In a stunning upset, Andrew Kofi Egyapa Mercer, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Sekondi, has lost his seat to Blay Nyameke Armah of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr. Armah secured a decisive victory, garnering 14,558 votes, which translates to 56.40% of the total valid votes. In contrast, Egyapa Mercer, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), polled 11,084 votes, representing 42.94% of the total valid votes.
This unexpected turn of events marks a significant shift in the Sekondi parliamentary seat, which Egyapa Mercer had dominated in the 2016 elections. The election saw a total of 25,813 votes cast, with 171 ballots rejected.
Egyapa Mercer’s defeat brings an end to his tenure as the Member of Parliament for Sekondi, a position he had held since 2017.
Blay Nyameke Armah’s victory in the 2024 parliamentary election marks a significant shift in the constituency’s political landscape. In a previous election, the incumbent had won decisively with 16,839 votes, representing 59.47% of the total valid votes, defeating Emmanuel Assifuah of the NDC and other candidates from the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Convention People’s Party (CPP).
However, Armah’s win signals a strong resurgence for the NDC in the constituency, indicating a closely contested parliamentary race in the 2024 elections.
