The 2024 Presidential Candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama has received a call from Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, congratulating him on his apparent victory in the race.
The former President took to X, formerly known as Twitter to reveal that he had had conversed with his political rival less than 24 hours after the election.
“I have, this morning, received a congratulatory call from my brother Dr. Bawumia following my emphatic victory in Saturday’s election. Thank you Ghana,” he wrote in a post.
Mr. Mahama will become the only former Ghanaian president to return to office in the country’s history. He will also become the 6th President of the 4th Republic.
The former president first contested for the presidency in 2012 after his boss and running mate, President John Atta Mills passed away while in office.
It will be his last term in office as the constitution bars any individual from serving more than two terms in the nation’s highest office.
Dr. Bawumia, who addressed a press conference after speaking with former President Mahama, said his campaign’s internal data indicated that the former head of state had “won the elections decisively”.
“Even though we await the final collation for a number of seats, however, I believe that these will not ultimately change the overall outcome,” Dr. Bawumia said at his residence amidst family, NPP officials and friends.
He said he respected the people’s decision “with all humility”.
The Electoral Commission, the body mandated by law to declare election results, is yet to officially determine who has won.
