A Governance expert Dr. Fredrick Oduro has raised concerns about the legal mandate of President-elect Mahama’s recently established anti-corruption preparatory team, arguing that it is merely a political gimmick.
This comes despite assurances by the incoming President that the “Operation Recover All Loot” (O.R.A.L) is not a witch-hunting body.
The body is tasked with investigating suspected acts of corruption under the Akufo-Addo led government.
However, speaking to Starr News, Dr. Oduro stated that the incoming government should prioritize addressing the economy and wellbeing of Ghanaians rather than focusing on political revenge.
“If the President-elect would like to set up a commission to address this issue, I’m comfortable with that, as it falls within our legal framework. However, setting up a body at this time, especially one without a clear mandate, raises questions. What is the purpose of such a body? Is it meant to gather information, or is it intended for witch-hunting?”
“Additionally, if this body calls someone in for questioning, does it have the authority to summon individuals? I’m unclear on what the body is supposed to do. I also wonder, once the President-elect is sworn into office, what role such a body would play given the existence of constitutionally established bodies like the police service and other relevant institutions.”
“In my opinion, the incoming administration should focus more on addressing our economic challenges and the overall well-being of the Ghanaian people,” he added.
